J. Lee Sedwick, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a retired surgeon and Clinical Professor of Surgery at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Throughout his career, he has been keenly interested in medical history and filmmaking, and has produced many documentary films on pioneers in medicine.

Several of these historic films are now available online for viewing and downloading. Links are provided below.

The films were produced in collaboration with long-time associate, Larry Gardner, of Digifonics, Inc. in Apex, NC.

Billroth and Brahms: A Study in Science and Music

A 48-minute documentary on the lives of 19th century surgeon, Theodor Billroth (1829-1894), and composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1898), centering on their accomplishments and long friendship. An abridged version is also available here.

The Pap Test

A 15-minute life sketch of George Nicholas Papanicolauo (1883-1969), cytologist and developer of the famous Pap Test, a vaginal smear capable of detecting cervical and uterine cancer at a very early stage.

A biography of Joseph Lord Lister (1827-1912), highlighting his accomplishments in antiseptic surgery. 22 minutes.

Film biography of Gregor Mendel (1822-1884), the Moravian monk who became the father of modern genetics through his study of pea plants. 30 minutes.

Six modern medical historians present their insights into the life and many accomplishments of Scottish surgeon John Hunter (1729-1793). 25 Minutes.

The History of Stapling in Surgery

1984 documentary of the inventions and developments that led to the current widespread use of surgical staples as a replacement for conventional sutures.  10 minutes.
